Six Ways to Use The Space Under Your Stairs for Storage

What do you do with that parcel of useless space under the stairs? It’s been a question that has been asked a few hundred times by no doubt a few hundred people. We’ve taken a look at some of the more creative ways to use this awkward, but potentially, efficient use of space. Though this post covers a variety of ideas for saving space under stairs, we always welcome suggestions from our readers. No Need to Whine

Actually, a wine cellar is a great idea for using that space under the basement steps. The usually cool environment of a basement is conducive to the wine fermenting process. For many people collecting different types of wine is a growing hobby and you’ll have room for that hobby without taking up needed space elsewhere. Now what to do with all those used corks?

A Place for Fido

Dogs being the den animals that they are love to have their own little closed-in space. Needless to say, they are not the least bit claustrophobic! If your space under the stairs is a small one, you can build a little home for your canine companion furnished with comfy cushions and a special place for food and water. If necessary, adding doors will keep them from roaming the house when the rest of the family is asleep or when they need protection from rambunctious children.

Why Not a Water Closet

If you’re handy with plumbing, or need to hire a licensed contractor, you can turn that space under the steps in an extra bathroom. I knew a family in our old neighborhood that had nine children—all girls, yes I said NINE, living under the same roof. They could have used this suggestion, as it would have made for a more peaceful home atmosphere.

For the Bookworm

I know this is the age of Kindles and Nooks, but do you remember how good it felt to hold an actual book in your hand? For those of us antiquarians that can’t seem to give up their favorite reads, storing books under the stairs can be a unique idea and you won’t even have to buy a bookcase! Boxed cubes made of wood, or other material will fit nicely under the stairs. Stacking books vertically and horizontally can add a decorative touch.

Not Your Average Nook

Now that you have a place to put all those books, why not build a place to read them? Adding a small storage bench, with a custom-made cushion is really all you need. To save cost, a do-it-yourself cushion can be made by visiting your nearest fabric store and buying some thick foam and material. Don’t forget to measure first! Finish the look off by adding decorative cushions and a throw.

Storage Wars

Got stuff? You’re not alone. Most of us have too much clutter and not enough space to put it in. Enter, under the stairs, drawers, shelves, and sliding cabinets. If too many clothes or household essentials are your problem, easy access drawers can be installed best by contacting a licensed contractor. If you have a home business with too many file folders to store, slide-out storage options may be the way you want to go.
