Home Remodeling Software

Home remodeling software allows you to see your ideas come to life before your eyes, in rich 3-dimensional color. It’s a great tool for getting the design you really want for your new kitchen, master suite, living room or entire house. Even if you’re just adding outdoor landscaping lights around a patio, you can see the fruit of your efforts well in advance! In some areas, depending on the size and scope of the remodeling project, you may be required to provide a set plans in order to get remodeling permits or inspections.

In this Remodeling Cost Guide, we’ll look at home remodeling software, how hard it is to learn and use, how much it cost, and when you might need it for your home remodel. If you’ve used remodeling programs in the past, please join the discussion and share your experience.

The Cost of Remodeling Software

There are several sites that allow you to plan, save and print your designs online for free. Do an online search for home remodeling software and you’ll find several free sites on the first page of your results. There are a few drawbacks to these free sites, however. You can’t actually download the software. Your work is done online. Secondly, they don’t offer as many design tools as some of the home remodeling software that isn’t free. Finally, since they are free, you might be subject to ads while you use the service.

The home remodeling software packages that are not free range in cost from $65-$100. The most expensive ones are the best, but most of the others are very good too, and will probably suffice. Features most offer include 2-D and 3-D design options, step-by-step design, template house plans and room plans you can edit, aerial and 360-degree views, interior lighting simulation, exterior design tools, landscape and deck/patio tools and cost estimation.

Objects you can place into your designs include light fixtures, furniture, appliances, windows, flooring cabinets, staircases, ramps and more. There are many import/export options including 3D files, BMP, JPEG, PNG and more. Even if you are only adding a kitchen island to your home, its useful to plug the data into a remodeling software application, and see how it will look ahead of time.

Remodeling Software Ease of Use

Most home remodeling software is very easy to use. It can be step by step if you want, or you can decide how to go about designing the rooms you are planning to remodel. If you’re calculating other projects, like the cost of adding a deck outside your home, using software to estimate the materials and cost can be a huge timesaver.

Handy menus and tools allow you to set up room size and begin to add the features you want. Removing features is just as easy, so you can experiment with the design until it is exactly what you’re looking for.

When you meet with contractors, your saved designs will allow them to see what you have in mind, make suggestions, integrate changes required by code, and more. Print your designs or take your laptop with you as you shop for cabinets, flooring, lighting, fixtures, etc.

Spending the $65-$100 for home remodeling software won’t put much of a dent in your home remodeling costs, but will be a tool that helps you get the finished look and functionality you desire.
